You have a housing to test-fit, a bracket to check against a drawing, or a model to prime and paint, and you want to see the geometry clearly before you commit to the final part. Bright colours hide layer lines and surface defects. Black swallows detail. A neutral grey shows you exactly what the printer produced.

Creality Soleyin Ultra PLA in Grey is a 1.75 mm polylactic acid (PLA) filament held to a ±0.02 mm diameter tolerance, vacuum-sealed with desiccant and wound in neat, even rows. It prints from 30 to 300 mm/s at 190 to 230°C on most 1.75 mm FDM printers.

The result is a neutral, workshop-grey print that reveals detail, takes primer well and keeps your cost per prototype low.

1.75 mm ±0.02 mm | 1 kg net | Neutral grey | 30 to 300 mm/s | 190 to 230°C nozzle | Vacuum-sealed with desiccant | Fits most 1.75 mm FDM printers

Who Creality Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey is built for

Prototyping engineers

Your job is to prove form and fit quickly, then iterate. Grey shows edges, fillets and surface flaws under workshop lighting, so you spot a mismatched hole or a warped flange before it reaches the client. The ±0.02 mm tolerance keeps extrusion steady, which helps printed dimensions match your CAD model. Example: print three revisions of an electronics enclosure in one day on a K1C 2025 and test-fit the PCB in each.

Small print farm operators

Functional parts, jigs, replacement knobs and cable organisers are usually ordered in neutral colours. Soleyin Ultra PLA gives you a dependable everyday grey at a cost that protects your margin on volume orders, and neat winding cuts the tangles that stop unattended jobs. Example: run 120 grey cable clips overnight across two printers and pack them for dispatch in the morning.

Cosplay and miniature painters

Grey is the colour painters choose because it shows sanding progress and gives an even base for primer and paint, without a strong colour bleeding through light coats. Soleyin Ultra PLA prints with low warping on a 45 to 60°C bed, so large flat panels stay flat. Example: print a helmet visor frame in grey, fill and sand the layer lines, then prime and paint in a weekend.

What sets Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey apart

Consistent diameter for repeatable dimensions

Printed dimensions depend on steady flow, and steady flow depends on the filament. Creality holds Soleyin Ultra PLA to a ±0.02 mm diameter and roundness tolerance on the 1.75 mm nominal size. Wall thickness, hole sizes and press fits stay consistent from the start of the spool to the end. Once you have tuned flow rate and pressure advance for one spool, the same settings carry over to the next, which matters when you print the same part week after week.

Speed range from careful to fast

The filament is rated from 30 to 300 mm/s. On a slower bed-slinger it behaves like a well-made standard PLA. On a fast fused filament fabrication printer with a high-flow hot end, you can push draft prototypes much faster. Creality recommends a flow and retraction calibration before running above 200 mm/s, with the part-cooling fan at 100% so overhangs and bridges hold their shape.

Packed dry, wound clean

PLA is hygroscopic, and damp filament produces stringing, popping and rough walls that ruin a test fit. Each spool arrives vacuum-sealed with a desiccant pack. Automated winding lays every turn neatly beside the last, which reduces the crossovers and knots that cause mid-print failures on long jobs.

Strength for functional prototypes

Creality lists a tensile strength of 45.5 MPa, a flexural strength of 70.7 MPa and an elongation at break of 12.9% in the X-Y direction. That is in line with good standard PLA, stiff and dimensionally stable. It suits fit-check prototypes, indoor fixtures, display models and light-duty brackets. For parts that see heat above roughly 50°C or sustained load, move to PETG or ABS for the final version.

Choosing between Soleyin Ultra PLA and Hyper PLA

Both are Creality PLAs on 1 kg spools. Choose by speed and budget.

Filament Rated speed Best for
Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey (this spool) 30 to 300 mm/s Prototypes, functional parts, painted models, cost-sensitive batches
Creality Hyper PLA, Grey High-speed formulation Maximum-speed profiles on K1 and K2 series printers

Frequently asked questions about Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey

Is Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey better than Creality Hyper PLA Grey?

For most prototypes and functional parts, it gives the same practical result at a lower cost per kilogram. Creality Hyper PLA is formulated for the fastest profiles on K-series printers. Choose Hyper PLA if you routinely run maximum-speed profiles, and Soleyin for everyday printing.

Can Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey be sanded, primed and painted?

Yes, grey PLA is one of the easiest colours to finish. Sand with 220 grit and work up to 400 grit, apply a filler primer to hide layer lines, then paint with acrylics or spray paint. The neutral base means light colours need fewer coats than over white or black filament.

Why is my Soleyin PLA blobbing or extruding unevenly?

Moisture or too low a nozzle temperature are the usual causes. Some owners report rough extrusion and blobs on fast printers. Dry the spool at about 50°C for four to six hours in a Creality Space Pi Filament Dryer, then raise the nozzle temperature in 5°C steps and re-run a flow calibration.

How should I store an opened spool?

Keep it sealed with desiccant, away from humidity and direct sun. PLA absorbs moisture over a few weeks in open air, faster in coastal cities such as Durban and Cape Town. A Creality Filament Vacuum Storage Kit keeps opened spools ready to print.

Do you stock Soleyin Ultra PLA Grey locally in South Africa?

Yes, we hold Creality filament at our Centurion and Boksburg stores and ship nationwide by courier. You can collect in store or have it delivered, and our local team can help you dial in settings for your printer.
