A cracked bracket on a discontinued machine, a client's one-off part with no drawing on file, a production line that needs a go/no-go check on every tenth casting, these are the jobs that stall when a workshop only has calipers and a tape measure. The Creality Sermoon X1 turns any of them into a scan you can hold, measure, and rebuild from within minutes, because it captures dark, reflective, and metallic surfaces without a spray coating and without a tether to a desk.

It combines a blue laser array with near infrared structured light in one handheld body, so you get metrology-grade accuracy on small, detailed parts and fast markerless 3D scanning coverage on large assemblies, in the same session. For an engineering workshop, a print farm taking on reverse-engineering jobs, or a quality team that needs traceable dimensional data, that flexibility is the headline benefit. Who the Sermoon X1 is built for

Prototyping and product design engineers

When you're reverse-engineering a competitor's housing or capturing a hand-shaped clay model to bring into CAD, you need a point cloud that holds its shape at 0.02 mm without hours of marker placement. The Sermoon X1's texture and geometry tracking modes lock onto complex surfaces on the fly, so you can scan a gearbox casing, drop the mesh into SolidWorks or Fusion 360, and have a working reference model before the end of the day.

Small print farm and reverse-engineering operators

Custom replacement parts, cosplay props copied from a client's own armour, or a batch of scanned components queued for reprinting all depend on getting from object to G-code fast. The wireless mode lets you walk around a large item, like a full motorcycle fairing, without cables dragging across the workbench, and CrealityScan's automatic alignment exports a print-ready STL straight into your slicer.

Quality inspection and metrology teams

Batch-checking cast or machined parts against a CAD reference calls for repeatable accuracy, not a scanner that drifts between sessions. The Sermoon X1's volumetric accuracy of 0.02 mm plus 0.04 mm per metre, tightened further with scale bars, gives you defensible dimensional data for a deviation report, and the CNC-machined aluminium frame keeps calibration stable through a full shift of handheld use.

What sets the Sermoon X1 apart

Two scanning technologies in one handheld unit

Most scanners force a choice between laser precision and structured-light speed. The Sermoon X1 switches between a single blue laser line, 7 parallel lines, and 34 cross lines for fine detail on small parts, and near infrared structured light for markerless coverage of larger objects up to 4 m. You pick the mode that fits the part in front of you rather than buying a second scanner for the jobs the first one can't handle.

Reflective and dark surfaces without a spray can

Chrome fittings, black rubber housings, and polished metal components have always meant reaching for anti-glare spray before scanning, which adds a step, a mess, and a wait for the coating to dry before every job. The hybrid laser and NIR sensors on the Sermoon X1 read these surfaces directly, using supplementary LED lighting to compensate for glare and low contrast, so a machined aluminium bracket, a chromed valve body, or a matte black enclosure scans cleanly on the first pass, without a trip to the supply cupboard first.

Wireless scanning that keeps up with the job

A Wi-Fi 6 connection transmits data at up to 4.7 Gbps with roughly 10 ms latency, close enough to a wired connection that you won't notice a lag walking around a full-size object like a vehicle panel or a large mould. The built-in 5,000 mAh battery, charged over USB-C, runs for more than four hours of continuous scanning, which covers a full inspection round or a large reverse-engineering job without a mid-session recharge or a cable tying you to a laptop on the bench.

Colour and texture captured alongside geometry

A dedicated 2 MP full-colour RGB camera with a Qualcomm ISP chip records texture in the same pass as the geometry scan, so a museum piece, a cosplay prop, or a branded component comes out with its surface colour, logos, and wear marks mapped onto the mesh, not just a bare grey shape you have to texture from scratch later. That saves a separate photography and UV-mapping step for anyone producing scans for visualisation, documentation, or a client presentation.

Speed that turns a walk-around into a finished scan

At up to 90 frames per second and as many as 1,734,000 points captured per second in 34-line laser mode, or 5,000,000 points per second in NIR mode, the Sermoon X1 builds a dense point cloud as fast as you can move around the object. A part that once needed a slow, careful pass, holding the scanner steady over every panel line and fastener, now scans in a single confident walk, with CrealityScan's real-time preview showing gaps you can go back and fill before you've even set the object down.

Materials and software

Surfaces this scanner handles

Unlike structured-light-only scanners, the hybrid laser and NIR sensor on the Sermoon X1 reads matte, reflective, dark, and metallic surfaces without an anti-glare spray. Machined aluminium and chromed fittings scan cleanly in laser mode, cast or 3D-printed parts in PLA or ABS scan just as easily in NIR mode, and dark rubber or leather components pick up detail thanks to the supplementary LED lighting built into the sensor housing. Highly transparent or glass surfaces remain the one case where a light dusting of scanning spray still helps, as with any optical scanner.

Slicers and software

Scans are processed in CrealityScan 4.0, which handles automatic frame alignment, point cloud merging, mesh reconstruction, and noise cleanup on Windows or macOS. Export a finished model as STL or OBJ for reverse engineering in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Blender, or as PLY or ASC for point cloud analysis in Geomagic and similar metrology software. A scan destined for reprinting drops straight into Creality Print or any major slicer once it's exported as an STL.

Ordering, shipping and support

The Sermoon X1 ships nationwide across South Africa by courier from our Centurion and Boksburg stores, with tracked delivery to major centres typically within 2 to 4 working days. It's covered by a 12-month warranty handled locally, so a repair or replacement claim doesn't mean shipping the unit overseas. Reflective markers, calibration plates, and CrealityScan updates are available through our support team, and our technical staff can help with scan mode selection or workflow questions over the phone or email.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sermoon X1 better than the CR-Scan RaptorX?

The Sermoon X1 offers tighter volumetric accuracy (0.02 mm + 0.04 mm/m versus 0.06 mm/m) and roughly 70% higher peak laser scan speed, making it the stronger choice for detailed metrology work. The RaptorX is lighter at 405 g and costs less, which suits buyers prioritising portability and budget over peak precision.

Can the Sermoon X1 scan dark, reflective, and metallic parts without spraying them?

Yes. The combined blue laser and NIR sensor reads black, chromed, and polished metal surfaces directly, without the anti-glare spray coating that structured-light-only scanners often need. Only highly transparent or glass surfaces still benefit from a light matte spray.

How long does it take to get a usable first scan out of the box?

Most first-time users complete calibration and a clean first scan within 30 to 45 minutes, including unboxing, software installation, and a practice pass on the included calibration plate. CrealityScan's guided calibration walks you through the process, and the automatic alignment modes mean you don't need marker placement experience to get a usable result.

How often does the scanner need recalibrating?

There's no fixed schedule, recalibrate with the supplied calibration plate whenever scans start showing visible seams between frames, after the unit has been dropped or knocked, or after extended travel. The process takes a few minutes in CrealityScan and doesn't require sending the unit anywhere.

Does it come with a South African plug and local warranty support?

The unit ships with a USB-C power adapter and the appropriate plug configuration for South African use, and the 12-month warranty is handled through our stores in Centurion and Boksburg rather than through an overseas return process. Local stock of markers, calibration plates, and cables means a lost accessory doesn't stall a project.
