Your Bambu Lab A1 or A1 Mini already prints well. What it cannot do on its own is switch colours mid-model, hold a second material for a support layer, or run a four-colour logo without you standing at the printer swapping spools by hand.

The AMS Lite bolts onto the side of either printer and takes that job over. Four spools sit on open pegs, RFID coils read each Bambu Lab spool as it loads, and the printer switches between them automatically during a print. No enclosure, no drying cycle, just the multi-colour capability the A1 series was designed to take on.

Who the Bambu Lab AMS Lite is built for

The A1 or A1 Mini owner who has outgrown single-colour printing

A single-colour print gets you a functional part. A model that needs a logo in a second colour, a highlight detail, or a label in contrasting filament needs a second spool loaded and swapped mid-print, or it needs an AMS Lite. Bolted to the side of your A1 or A1 Mini, it feeds up to four spools into the same toolhead automatically, so a two-colour keychain or a highlighted enclosure badge prints in one unattended run instead of a manual pause-and-swap partway through.

The parent, educator, or hobbyist on a fixed printer budget

Multi-colour printing usually means buying into Bambu Lab's enclosed range at a materially higher price point. The AMS Lite instead adds that capability to the A1 or A1 Mini you may already own, at a fraction of the cost of stepping up to a printer with a built-in AMS. For a classroom running colour-coded parts for a robotics project, or a household printing multi-colour toys and props, it is the more direct route to four-colour output without replacing the printer.

The maker prototyping colour and material variants quickly

Testing three colourways of the same design, or comparing a rigid and a flexible variant of a bracket, usually means re-loading filament and re-slicing between each run. With four spools loaded into the AMS Lite at once, you queue the variants in Bambu Studio and let the printer work through them, switching feed automatically between jobs rather than requiring you to swap spools by hand each time.

What sets the Bambu Lab AMS Lite apart

An open-frame design built for fast spool changes

Rather than an enclosed box with a lid, the AMS Lite uses four spool pegs arranged in an open, car-wheel layout on a desk stand. Loading or swapping a spool is a matter of lifting one off a peg and setting another on, with no latch or lid to manage. That openness trades away the incidental dust protection a sealed AMS provides, so it suits a reasonably clean desk or workshop environment better than a dusty garage or a woodworking space.

RFID recognition on every slot

Each of the four slots carries its own RFID coil, reading the tag embedded in genuine Bambu Lab filament spools as they load. The printer applies the correct temperature and flow profile automatically and tracks remaining filament per spool, so switching from a black PLA to a white PETG mid-queue does not require you to manually reconfigure settings in Bambu Studio for each material.

Four-colour, four-material switching in a single print

Once connected, the AMS Lite lets your A1 or A1 Mini switch between up to four loaded spools automatically within one print job, whether that means four colours of the same PLA or a mix of compatible materials across the print. Only one AMS Lite can be connected per printer, so four spools is the practical ceiling on this setup, a limit worth knowing if a project needs more colours than that in a single job.

Built for what the A1 series is designed to print

The AMS Lite is purpose-matched to the A1 and A1 Mini's open-frame design and material range. It handles the standard FDM filaments those printers already run well, PLA and PETG in particular. Flexible filaments such as TPU and moisture-sensitive materials such as PVA are not recommended through the AMS Lite, since its open frame and Bowden-style feed path are not built for the retraction demands of flexible filament or the humidity control that hygroscopic materials need.

Materials and software

Filaments the AMS Lite handles well

  • PLA, the AMS Lite's strongest fit. RFID auto-recognition applies the correct profile per spool, and the A1 series prints PLA reliably across an open frame.
  • PETG, well supported for functional parts needing a splash of moisture or UV resistance beyond PLA. Since the AMS Lite has no drying function, store PETG spools in a sealed container between print sessions rather than leaving them loaded indefinitely in humid conditions.
  • PLA-CF and other lightly filled composites, generally workable on the A1 series, though heavier abrasive composites are better suited to a printer with a hardened steel nozzle from the factory, such as the P2S or X2D.
  • TPU, TPE, and PVA, not recommended. Flexible filaments need the short, controlled feed path of a direct-drive extruder rather than the AMS Lite's longer Bowden-style route, and PVA's rapid moisture absorption is a poor match for an undried, open-frame system.

Slicers and software

The AMS Lite is configured and monitored through Bambu Studio on macOS, Windows, and Linux, where you assign filaments to slots, map colours or materials to specific parts of a model, and read remaining filament and RFID data per spool. The Bambu Handy app mirrors slot status and lets you queue prints remotely. Third-party slicers such as OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, and Cura can generate compatible G-code for the A1 series, but AMS slot assignment and RFID data are Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy features specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AMS Lite worth it compared to buying an A1 Mini Combo with AMS Lite included?

If you already own a standalone A1 or A1 Mini, buying the AMS Lite separately is the only way to add multi-colour capability without replacing the printer. If you are buying new, compare the combined cost of a solo printer plus a standalone AMS Lite against the combo price, since Bambu Lab and local retailers often price the bundle below the sum of the two parts.

Can the AMS Lite print TPU, PVA, or other flexible filaments?

No, this is not recommended. The AMS Lite's Bowden-style feed path and open frame are suited to PLA and PETG, where retraction control and moisture sensitivity are manageable. TPU and TPE need the short feed path of a direct-drive extruder for reliable results, and PVA absorbs moisture too quickly for an undried, open-frame storage system.

How long does it take to install the AMS Lite on an A1 or A1 Mini?

Around 10 to 15 minutes. The unit bolts onto the side of the printer using the included mounting hardware, the PTFE tubes connect to the toolhead, and the connector cable links the AMS Lite to the printer's control board. Bambu Studio and the printer's touchscreen guide you through the initial slot calibration once connected.

Does the AMS Lite need any regular maintenance?

Basic upkeep only. Because the frame is open, dust builds up faster than in a sealed AMS, so wipe down the pegs and filament path periodically, particularly in a workshop with sawdust or sanding debris nearby. There is no drying cycle or filter to service, since the AMS Lite does not include active drying.

Does the Bambu Lab AMS Lite come with local warranty support in South Africa?

Yes. Warranty claims are handled locally through 3D Printing Store's Centurion and Boksburg branches, so a covered fault does not involve shipping the unit overseas. Contact our team for pre-purchase compatibility advice or warranty queries.
